Notary Public (Continuing Education)

A Notary Public is a public officer of the State of North Carolina appointed to perform acknowledgments, oaths and affirmations, and verifications. Durham Tech offers the Notary Public and Electronic Notary (e-notary) courses. Students must hold a valid commission as a notary public in the State of North Carolina before taking the Electronic Notary course.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will submit an application with the $50 fee to the N.C. Secretary of State's office to receive their commission. Students must purchase a notary seal or stamp. A computer (PC or Mac, not a cell phone) with high-speed Internet access, a camera and microphone, and a current web browser (Firefox or Chrome are recommended) are required. Students are required to be in class the full 8 hours to qualify to take the state exam. Students who do not pass the exam will have to re-register and pay for another class.

Notary Classes on Campus

Information will be sent to the email address the college has on file a few days prior to the class start date with details about the class. You may need to update your email address, postal address, and phone number when you register and pay for your class online. Your textbook is included in your tuition and will be provided to you in class. Students must provide a current and valid picture ID to the instructor at the beginning of the class. The ID cannot be temporary, paper copy, picture, or expired. If you cannot provide a valid ID, you will not be able to take the class.

Online Notary Classes

Information will be sent to the email address the college has on file a few days prior to the class start date with details about the class, how to log in, required assignments, and textbook pickup. You may need to update your email address, postal address, and phone number when you register and pay for your class online. Your textbook is included in your tuition and must be picked up. A computer (PC or Mac – not a cell phone) with high-speed Internet access and camera and microphone, and a current web browser (Firefox or Chrome are recommended) are required. You will be required to upload a current and valid ID and a picture of your textbook prior to the beginning of class.

Need to recommission as a Notary? A commissioned notary may apply for recommissioning no earlier than 10 weeks prior to the expiration date of the notary's commission at Notary Recommission. if your commission has expired longer than 10 weeks you will need to retake the Notary class.

LEX-3874A Notary Public

This course is designed to provide instruction to individuals who want to become commissioned as a Notary Public. Topics include legal, ethical and procedural requirements of the Notary Act. Upon completion of this course with a passing exam grade of 80%, a person is eligible to make an application with the NC Secretary of State office. Students are required to have a current and valid government issued photo ID to take the class; proof is required at the first class meeting. The NC Secretary of State requires that students attend the full 8 hours of class, and be able to speak, read, and write in English. Students that do not pass the licensure exam must register and pay for another full class. Textbooks are included in the tuition.
